The upper end of the handle of the Three Pure Ones Bell is shaped like the Chinese character for "mountain," symbolizing the Jade Pure Original Heavenly Lord (Yuanshi Tianzun), the Upper Pure Spiritual Treasure Heavenly Lord (Lingbao Tianzun), and the Great Pure Moral Heavenly Lord (Daode Tianzun) of Taoism. These three deities represent the supreme and highest gods in Taoism and embody the core beliefs and teachings of the religion. The bell is believed to have the power to connect heaven and earth, facilitating communication between humans and gods. During religious rituals, Taoist priests shake the bell, symbolizing the summoning of deities and praying for protection, so that the deities can hear human prayers and wishes, thereby bringing blessings and eliminating disasters. The sound of the bell is regarded in Taoist culture as having a deterrent effect on evil spirits, ghosts, zombies, and other malevolent forces, frightening them and keeping them at bay, thus serving to ward off evil, exorcise demons, and protect people from the harm of these forces. The crisp sound of the bell echoing in the wind creates a peaceful and serene atmosphere, helping practitioners enter a meditative state, eliminate distracting thoughts, and achieve a state of calmness and tranquility. It allows them to comprehend the mysteries of the Great Tao and the secrets of the universe, and is also a means for practitioners to cultivate their character and deepen their understanding of the Great Tao
The Vajra Bell represents the "Awakened One," its sound awakening sentient beings from ignorance and alerting them to the three poisons of greed, hatred, and delusion. In Tantric Buddhism, the bell symbolizes wisdom and represents the emptiness of Buddha-nature. Combined with the Vajra Dorje (thunderbolt), it embodies the unity of compassion and wisdom, and the harmony of yin and yang. The bell signifies the teaching of Dharma, with five types symbolizing the external manifestation of the five wisdoms and five Buddhas. Its sound is believed to purify, dispel evil, and create a serene atmosphere conducive to spiritual practice, while also protecting practitioners from malevolent forces
